Achilles Tendinitis

  • Your Achilles tendon is a strong band of tissue that connects your calf muscles to your heel. It is the largest and strongest tendon in the body and is vulnerable to injury due to the high demands placed on it. Symptoms may include pain, stiffness, and swelling that worsen with activity. Some patients notice that the irritated area becomes firmly swollen.

  • Achilles tendon injuries can be caused by excessive stretching or forceful contraction of the calf muscles or by repeated overload and micro-tears. Athletes, especially runners, are at an increased risk of Achilles tendon injuries.

  • Initially, you may need to limit or stop activities that cause pain. Runners may need to switch to swimming or cycling for a short period. Our providers will use myofascial release techniques and give you supporting rehab exercises speed up recovery.
