Hip Bursitis

  • Hip bursitis is inflammation of a small, fluid filled sac that reduces friction between bones, tendons, and muscles are the hip joint. Hip bursitis is often associated with greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS). This is an uncomfortable collection of problems affecting the muscles, tendons, and bursa (fluid-filled sacs) on the outside of your hip.

  • GTPS symptoms may increase with prolonged standing, stair climbing, high-impact activities like running, sitting with your legs crossed, and sleeping on the affected hip.

  • Conservative treatment, like the type provided in this office, is successful in most cases. Strengthening the hip muscles, particularly the gluteus medius, is essential. If you have acute pain, you may need to limit or discontinue activities that increase your discomfort temporarily. Avoid sleeping with a weighted blanket, which increases pressure on sensitive tissues. Some patients find temporary relief by applying sports creams.
