Lumbar Sprain/Strain

  • Lower back sprains and strains occur when the muscles and ligaments that support your spine are stretched too far or too hard, like a frayed rope. Symptoms of sprains and strains include stiffness and pain in the lower back, often made worse by movement. Be sure to tell your provider if you have a fever or pain or weakness extending into your leg.

  • These injuries can happen following sudden injuries, like falls or twists, but can also result from chronic stressors like repetitive activity or an unsupportive chair or bed. Athletic movements or heavy lifting can also be common causes for lower back strains.

  • Seeking early and appropriate chiropractic treatment is critical to minimize your risk of ongoing pain and arthritis. Taking breaks from sitting and avoiding activities that cause significant pain can be helpful. However, it is essential to understand that pain is a normal reaction to injury and that excessively limiting activities may delay recovery. Light aerobic exercise, such as walking, can help. You can apply ice for 10-15 minutes every hour for the first couple of days and heat afterward. In some cases, sports creams may provide some relief.
