IT Band Syndrome

  • Your iliotibial band is a fibrous band of tissue running from the crest of your hip down to your knee. The band passes over a sensitive area of tissue on the outer aspect of your knee. The condition usually presents as pain outside your knee that worsens with repetitive knee flexion or extension.

  • IT band syndrome is commonly caused by weakness in your gluteal muscles or having one leg longer than the other. Running hills or performing squats and deadlifts without proper technique may also contribute to IT band syndrome.

  • Our providers will use myofascial release techniques and evaluate your hips and lower back. Avoiding activities that cause significant pain and wearing proper footwear are helpful for your recovery. In some cases, arch supports or orthotic inserts may be necessary. Avoid using stair climbers or performing squats and deadlifts.
