Scoliosis

  • Scoliosis is a condition that affects the spine, causing it to curve from side to side rather than being straight. It affects 1-3% of the population and tends to run in families. Scoliosis can occur anytime but is most common between the ages of 13-18. Symptoms include unlevel shoulders, hips, or waist, and sometimes back pain. Your curve may be measured and periodically re-assessed with an x-ray.

  • While most of the time, the cause for scoliosis is unknown, there are a few less common causes: hereditary scoliosis tends to run in families and can be detected early on. Other causes include malformations in the spine that develop before birth, wear and tear on the spine due to aging, and “functional scoliosis” where things like prolonged muscle spasm, uneven leg length, and poor posture can contribute to the abnormal curvature.

  • Chiropractic care is an excellent source of treatment for scoliosis. Prominent curves may need a brace, but only a small fraction of cases require surgery. You should perform your home exercises consistently. Avoid carrying heavy backpacks, and consider switching to a wheeled version. Sports and exercise will not worsen most cases of scoliosis, and you should continue participating in what you enjoy unless your provider directs otherwise.
